For this Virgin Health Care folder, we used a unique varnish/aqueous technique that achieves the effect of a traditional offline (2 pass) dull/gloss varnish in one pass without the usual issues associated with trapping varnishes. The technique employs a dull varnish (in this case the word pattern) which is overprinted by an overall gloss aqueous coating. The oil based dull varnish actually "floats" up through the gloss aqueous resulting in a dull/gloss piece in one pass through the press! In addition to the obvious cost savings associated with printing the job in one pass, you also benefit by having no trap lines between the two varnishes because the gloss aqueous is overall.
